History:
Daenerys Targaryen, of the New York Targaryens, was born during the Blizzard of 1996--January 7th--in New York City. Her father, Aerys, was a rising politician who had just completed his first successful Senatorial campaign, and her mother, Rhaella, was actually his second cousin, a rich girl from the Hamptons who was forced into a loveless marriage by the Targaryen clan's ridiculous ideas about bloodlines and purity. She died giving birth to Daenerys, which led to resentment from her brother Viserys. Dany's oldest brother, Rhaegar, died before her birth on active duty as a Marine in the Bosnian war. Her older brother Viserys is a spoiled brat who Dany has always thought is mentally unstable, even if her father's pride always prevented him from having Viserys examined by a mental health professional.
She was raised in New York, living a privileged life full of private schools, expensive clothes, and not much warmth. She and Viserys were mainly ignored by her father, which was preferable to being shouted at or worse. Her father had a terrible temper, was known as the fiercest Republican senator since Joseph McCarthy, and had a history of violence besides. It was a relief for Dany to be sent off to boarding school at fifteen; Connecticut was far enough away that her father would leave her alone, and Viserys could still come and visit. She never had a great relationship with her brother, per se, but after Aerys died when she was sixteen--of a heart attack, though Dany and Viserys were of the belief that foul play was at hand--she came to depend on her brother for everything, even though she was well aware of his growing obsession with her, including possessiveness and constant reminders that their family bloodlines needed to be maintained. By the time she graduated, Dany's discomfort and disdain for her brother had grown to the point where she just wanted to escape. A tiny college town in Massachusetts sounded ideal, along with an almost ritual shedding of her rich-girl image; Dany began wearing more "alternative" clothing and acquired three pet ferrets: Rhaegal, Drogon, and Viserion--the second of which is named after her former Serious Boyfriend from the brother school to her all-girls boarding school.

Canon: No magical abilities, but she's literally walked into a funeral pyre and come out unscathed, just sayin'. Targaryens are said to be especially resistent to high temperatures; Dany can immerse herself in scalding hot water without any pain. She also speaks the Common Tongue, Dothraki, and High Valyrian, showing an aptitude for languages.
